The Magic of the Musical

From the bright lights of Broadway to community stages around the globe, musical theatre stands as one of the most vibrant and beloved art forms.1 It is a unique and captivating spectacle that seamlessly blends music, dance, and drama to tell a story in a way that regular plays or concerts simply cannot.2 More than just a collection of songs, a great musical is a carefully crafted theatrical event where the emotional arc of the characters and the plot are advanced through every element on stage.3

What Makes a Musical? The Three Pillars

A musical is built upon the collaborative genius of a team, typically including a composer (who writes the music), a lyricist (who writes the words to the songs), and a book writer or librettist (who writes the script, or "book").4 The final production is brought to life by a director, choreographer, and designers.

The Book (or Script):

The Score (Music and Lyrics)

The Choreography (Dance and Movement)

The Lasting Impact

Why does musical theatre endure? Because at its core, it is about the human experience amplified. It offers an escape into a world where emotions are so big they must burst into song, where conflict is resolved in a dazzling dance number, and where a few hours in a dark theater can leave an audience transformed. It remains a powerful vehicle for storytelling, cultural commentary, and, above all, unforgettable entertainment.

Whether you prefer the classic romance of West Side Story, the gritty realism of Cabaret, or the modern energy of Six, there is a musical out there waiting to sweep you off your feet.

Musical Theatre Competition Invitation Registration

Spotlight On: Musical Theatre

This is the premier stage for performers who master the ultimate challenge: fusing technical dance skill with dynamic, authentic theatrical storytelling.

Register Your Act Now

Don't Just Perform—Become the Character

The Musical Theatre category celebrates routines derived from stage or film musicals. Success here demands a high degree of technical skill, synchronization, and most importantly, an unwavering commitment to character and narrative.

Interactive Rulebook

This section provides all the rules for the Musical Theatre category. Click on each tab to reveal the specific requirements and guidelines for your performance, from style to time limits. Understanding these rules is the first step to a winning performance.

Performance Style

Must be inspired by or directly from a recognized musical, from either stage or screen. The routine should clearly communicate a story or character arc from the source material.

Acceptable Dance

Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Ballet, or contemporary styles are acceptable, but they **must** serve the theatrical narrative of the performance. The choice of dance style should be appropriate for the chosen musical and character.

Costuming & Props

Costumes and props are encouraged to enhance the character and setting. However, overly distracting elements that do not serve the story may result in a point deduction from the judges.

Entry Types

  • Solos, Duets, Trios
  • Small Groups (4-9 performers)
  • Large Groups (10-18 performers)
  • Lines (19+ performers)

Time Limits

  • Solo/Duet/Trio: [Specify Time, e.g., 2:45 minutes]
  • Groups/Lines: [Specify Time, e.g., 4:00 minutes]

Judging Criteria Breakdown

Your performance will be evaluated by our expert panel based on three core pillars. This chart visualizes how your final score is weighted. Hover over any section of the chart to see the specific judging component. A successful routine excels in all three areas.
